In the first set, the match was still relatively one-sided in favor of Medvedev , which was also due to the Argentinian's higher error rate. In the second set Schwartzman showed what he was capable of and fought his way back into the game and won the set after several set balls awarded and forced the Russian into a decision set.
In the third set it was a balanced match up to the level of 3: 3. It was clear to both players that the tank was no longer full. In the end, Medvedev showed nerve strength and made the break to 5: 3, which he then confirmed to win the match 6: 4 4: 6 6: 3.
In the interview, Medvedev said that he did not feel good and was happy to have won the match in the end. Marat Safin was also satisfied and was glad that after a very emotional phase in the match, which also led to a penalty point against Medvedev, his protégé could catch himself again and win the victory for Russia.
Daniil Medvedev placed fourth at Australian Open
Russia is now in the semi-finals and will face the winner between Serbia and Canada.
Dominic Thiem's poor performance in the ATP Cup cost him a place in the tennis world rankings. In this, Medvedev will push him from fourth to fifth place on Monday. This gives the Russian fourth place in the seed list at the Australian Open, avoiding a possible duel with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic before the semi-finals.
