Can Carlos Alcaraz also celebrate in Hamburg?

The top favourite : Carlos Alcaraz has already won four titles this year, two each in the 1000 (in Miami and Madrid) and two in the 500 category (in Rio de Janeiro and Barcelona). The 19-year-old is in fifth place in the current ATP world rankings, and the trend is rising. As is well known, the ashes suit him well, even if the title was not enough at the big highlight of the season in Roland Garros: it was the final stop against Alexander Zverev. In Hamburg, however, there should be no way around a well-restrained Alcaraz.

The first challenger : Andrey Rublev is still engaged in Bastad this week, so the Russian is already warming up for Hamburg at sea level. Rublev has already won three titles this year: in Marseille, Dubai and Belgrade. And the 24-year-old from Moscow also has good memories of Rothenbaum: in 2020 he won the tournament there in an epic final against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the “autumn edition”.

Solid contenders : Diego Schwartzman is always good for an upset on clay, along with Rublev and also Pablo Carreno Busta in Bastad this week. The Spaniard will also start in Hamburg. The Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, already a finalist in Munich this year, should not be underestimated. And the winner of that tournament in the Bavarian capital is also at the start in Hamburg: Holger Rune . The 19-year-old Dane is one of the rising stars of the season and has reached the quarter-finals of a major for the first time at Roland Garros. And there's also the two-time Hamburg champion Nikoloz Basilashvili , who can shoot all opponents off the court on a good day.

The local hero : Oscar Otte may be from Cologne, but has already been incorporated as a local hero by fans in Munich, Stuttgart and HalleWestfalen this season. In these three tournaments, Otte reached the semi-finals. For Hamburg, Otte had to withdraw at short notice due to an injury. Which is all the more regrettable as the last German victory dates back to 1993. At that time, Michael Stich had struck.
