Lorenzo Musetti and Hamburg 2022: That doesn't work without drama. At the start against Dusan Lajovic, the Italian was on the verge of being eliminated and had to fend off two match points. After that, Musetti had serious problems with his successes against Emil Ruusuvuori and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to bring a victory over the distance that actually seemed certain. And that's how it was in the first semi-final on Saturday against Francisco Cerundolo. Musetti led twice with a break in the second set, missed two match points at 5: 4 and had to be happy to even get into the tie-break. But at least he didn't miss a beat there and finally won 6:3 and 7:6 (3) against the Bastad champion from last week.
In Sunday's final, Musetti will face either tournament favorite Carlos Acaraz or surprise man Alex Molcan. For the 20-year-old Musetti, reaching the final in Hamburg is another milestone in his young career: he had never gotten that far in a tournament on the ATP tour. The man from Carrara will definitely reach a new career high: On Monday he will be at least 40th in the ATP charts.
In doubles, hopes of a home win were not fulfilled: Tim Pütz and his New Zealand partner Michael Venus lost 4:6 and 4:6 to Lloyd Glasspool and Harry Heliovaara. Glasspool/Heliovara had previously eliminated Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies from the competition.
