Carlos Alcaraz was only just able to prevent something in Basel that is a rarity in modern tennis: namely having to suffer a first-round defeat in the first two tournaments after climbing to number one in the world rankings. The Spaniard had a hard time against a great Jack Draper, but after losing the first set he won in three hard-fought sets.

However, it was not enough for Alcaraz for a big run in Basel. Also because the Spaniard was supposed to meet what is probably the most in-form player in the world in the semi-finals: Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime. He was crowned champion for the third time in the past few weeks at the ATP 500 event in Basel's St. Jakobshalle on Sunday. It is the second title at ATP 500 level for the 22-year-old, who is also a favorite in the ATP Masters 1000 event in Paris-Bercy.

Alacarz will play

Alcaraz's appearance there on Monday was uncertain for a long time. Because, as the Spanish medium AS reported, citing Alcaraz' environment , the world number one had had knee problems since the end against Auger-Aliassime. Allegedly, he underwent an examination on Monday. The results should now be available and probably give the 19-year-old the green light: According to AS, Alcaraz will start in Paris-Bercy.

"I had problems (with my knee). Every player has problems at the end of the year. It's not too serious," Alcaraz explained at a media event in the run-up to the ATP Masters 1000 event. The Spaniard meets the dangerous Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka at the start. For Alcaraz, the end of the season is all about ending the year as number one in the world.
