The special features of the ranking system in Corona times mean that Bianca Andreescu started the Australian Open as number eight. And that although the 2019 US Open winner was unable to play a match for more than 15 months due to various injuries. Now Andreescu is back and passed the first test in Melbourne by defeating Mihaela Buzarnescu in three sets. She would be "super, super happy", Andreescu declared after her victory. And wanted to thank her team too. But that had already made its way into the catacombs.

The next task awaits the 20-year-old Su-Wei Hsieh, in round three it could be against Venus Williams. The latter won the first game on Monday in the Margaret Court Arena against Kirsten Flipkens.
