Towards the end it looked like a typical comeback for Angelique Kerber: Bernarda Pera served with a score of 6: 0 and 5: 4 to win the match, was quickly behind with 0:40. So three chances of a tie for Kerber, but could not use them. And it was the US-American who was allowed to put her hands up after a ball hit the Germans.
The first set had only taken 17 minutes before Pera made it 6-0. Kerber didn't seem ready for this task yet - which may well be related to the tough 14-day quarantine that the German number one had to go through. The appearances at the Grampians Trophy last week didn't help either.
Almost at the same time, Laura Siegemund, the second best German player, said goodbye. Siegemund lost in the Rod Laver Arena against Serena Williams with 1: 6 and 1: 6.
