The 27-year-old from Furtwangen beat the Spaniard Carlos Taberner 6:1, 3:6, 6:4, 6:1 in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament after a concentrated performance over long stretches.
In his previous two appearances in the Melbourne main draw, the Davis Cup player was over in the second round at the latest. Now the German number three is preparing to take the next step in a duel with Reilly Opelka (USA/No. 23) or Kevin Anderson (South Africa).
Previously, Munich's Peter Gojowczyk had failed 3: 6, 3: 6, 3: 6 at French Benjamin Bonzi. For Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau), the tournament is already over after the first day.
