The number three French Open winners and US Open semi-finalists from 2019 lost to the Kazakhs Alexander Bublik and Mikhail Kukuchkin with 3: 6, 6: 7 (7: 9). At the same time, Krawietz / Mies could not use a set ball in the second round. The two Germans thus missed a possible second-round duel with the ever-young Lleyton Hewitt, who will compete with Jordan Thompson at the Australian Open 2020.

On the other hand, Jan-Lennard Struff and partner Henri Kontinen got off to a successful start: The German Davis Cup player and his Finnish playmate defeated Andreas Seppi and Lorenzo Sonego 6: 4 and 6: 1.
