The upper half of the men's tableau at the Australian Open 2023 has become a good deal lighter due to Rafael Nadal's defeat by Mackenzie McDonald. Two heavyweights who have met in the semifinals for the past two years were not guilty of anything on Wednesday night.
First up was Daniil Medvedev, who had an odd first set with John Millman. The Russian kept leading with a break, Millman always came back. Until he just didn't come back. After the 7:5, the rest was a matter of form, Medvedev won sets two and three 6:2 and 6:2. The next opponent of the 2021 US Open champion will probably be Sebastian Korda.
Tsitsipas against a Dutchman
A few minutes after Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas also made his way into the third round, he did so 6: 3, 6: 0 and 6: against Rinky Hijikata in an expectedly sovereign manner. In any case, Tsitsipas will now be given a Dutchman: either Botic van de Zandschulp or Tallon Griekspoor.
US Open semi-finalist Frances Tiafoe didn't miss a beat against the young Chinese Jungshen Shang and safely advanced to the next round with 6: 4, 6: 4 and 6: 1. There Tiafoe meets Karen Khachanov, who won against Jason Kubler in four sets.
