The 36-year-old won in an up and down match 5: 7, 6: 2 and 7: 6 (10: 7) - with the third set in particular being a constant back and forth.
Sabalenka initially caught up from a 2:4 deficit, but then served three double faults to make it 4:4 and lost to zero. Kanepi then got three match points on his own serve at 40:0, but missed three mistakes without need, as well as a fourth match point.
In the tie-break, Sabalenka caught up again from a 2:5 deficit, but Kanepi remained steadfast. A bitter forehand error by Sabalenka brought her the 9:7, and she was already raising her arms, believing she had already won. Shortly afterwards it was time when a backhand from Sabalenka got caught in the net.
Kerber conqueror Kanepi: Now against Swiatek
Kanepi remains a "Grand Slam fright": Especially in the past few years, she hadn't torn too much on the tour, but she had knocked out some top names in the majors. The quarter-final participation at the Australian Open is now her seventh in a major tournament.
In round 1 Kanepi had won against Angelique Kerber.
The former world number 15 is missing a semi-final. still in the portfolio. If she wants to do that in Melbourne, she would have to win against Iga Swiatek the day after tomorrow .
