Every match that Jannik Sinner wins at the Australian Open 2022 also takes him up the ATP world rankings. Because Sinner is one of the few top players who has no points to defend from the previous year - he was defeated by Denis Shapovalov in the first round. Almost twelve months later, after the safe 6:2, 6:4, 6:3 against Steve Johnson, Sinner is already in the third round. And the chances of progressing are not bad: On Saturday, Sinner will face Taro Daniel from Japan. Daniel defeated Andy Murray in three sets.

Subsequently, a meeting with Alex de Minaur would be possible before Stefanos Tsitsipas could wait in the quarterfinals. The Greek had big problems in the first two sets of his second round match with Argentinian Sebastian Baez, eventually winning 7: 6 (1), 6: 7 (5), 6: 4 and 6.3.

Medvedev beats Kyrgios

Also in the lower half of the tableau, last year's finalist Daniil Medvedev stayed on course with a four-set win against Nick Kyrgios. Medvedev now plays against Botic van de Zandschulp and would definitely meet a surprise man afterwards: either Christopher O'Connell or Maxime Cressy.

And speaking of surprises: Only very few fans and observers expected Benoit Paire's success against Grigor Dimitrov. Paire can now compete with Stefanos Tsitsipas.
