The 20-year-old beat local hero Alex de Minaur 7: 6 (3), 6: 3, 6: 4 and thus reached the round of the last eight in a major tournament for the second time after the French Open 2020.
Sinner also followed compatriot Matteo Berrettini, who had already reached the quarter-finals yesterday by beating Pablo Carreno Busta.
Sinner gets a visit from butterflies
As always, Sinner was little disturbed, not even in the on-court interview when a butterfly settled on his cap. "It's all right, we'll leave him there," he explained - one of them hit him during the match. "Maybe a good sign, someone from the universe wants to tell you something good," Jim Courier joked.
So far, Sinner has been in good shape, even without luck: he has only lost one set in his four matches so far, in the third round match against Taro Daniel. In the end he beat it safely anyway.
He now meets the winner of the game between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Taylor Fritz ( here in the live ticker).
