Austrian tennis fans will get their money's worth again this year at the Erste Bank Open: As announced at a press conference on Tuesday, the current top ten will be Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev and Matteo Berrettini at the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna and Casper Ruud will be at the start.
However, the currently injured Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Roger Federer will not be there. US Open winner Daniil Medvedev also announced at an early stage that he would not take part in the event in the Wiener Stadthalle . Novak Djokovic, who was eliminated in the quarter-finals last year, is also not on the list of participants.
With Felix Auger-Aliassime, Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, who is equipped with a wildcard, three youngsters will also prove their skills in Vienna. The second wildcard went to the three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray, who won the trophy from Vienna in 2015 and 2016. The cut-off of the Erste Bank Open this year is world number 37.
A special highlight for the fans: The second match court will be on the Viennese Heumarkt for the first time this year. "That was a project we had been toying with for a long time," said tournament director Herwig Straka.
As he pointed out to the Kleine Zeitung , Straka is expecting a full house this year, unlike last year. Due to a decision by Mayor Michael Ludwig, only vaccinated or recovered people are allowed to attend the ATP tournament in Vienna, which will take place from October 25th to 31st.
