Altmaier, who had beaten the Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the first round, hit the German number two in the first set. The world number 32. Struff, on the other hand, made too little of his strong first serve, but then initially improved in the second set.
The favorite made a break straight away, had the chance to equalize the set, but then acted much too passively. In 2019, Struff had reached his biggest success so far in a major tournament with his round of 16 in Roland Garros, now a big turnaround had to be found for him. But he couldn't manage it anymore, Altmaier used his first match ball after 2:32 hours.
