It could have been such a great tournament for Jannik Sinner. Not only was the South Tyrolean in good shape right at the start of the second major event of the year, the draw was also kind to the youngster. Which consequently also reached the round of 16 at the French Open 2022. Although it was already clear in his third round duel with Mackenzie McDonald that Sinner was struggling physically.
On Monday there were initially no signs of these complaints in the round of 16 duel with Andrey Rublev. The Italian started like a fire brigade, got an early break and confidently transported it to win the set. Yes, the South Tyrolean even managed to take the serve from his opponent again - with 6: 1 set one clearly went to Sinner.
Sinner visibly impaired
It was different in the middle of the second round: now the knee problems at Sinner were becoming increasingly noticeable. The logical consequence: Sinner was treated for the first time after five games and then went to work very aggressively. The high risk was rewarded in the medium term - until the score was 4: 5, Sinner was able to hold his service games - but then the pressure from Rublev became too great, and the Russian managed to equalize the set with a break.
From now on it only seemed like a matter of time how long Sinner would like to continue dealing with these complaints. And indeed, the young Italian had to draw the line under this match prematurely after an early break by Andrey Rublev. The Russian, on the other hand, has reached the round of eight at Roland Garros - and could possibly meet his compatriot Daniil Medvedev there.
