For Oscar Otte, the French Open 2022 came to an abrupt end on Tuesday evening. The German fought a battle of attrition with Roberto Carballes Baena for almost four hours, but ultimately lost out in five sets. And that after Otte had previously been able to make up for a 0:2 deficit.
In the end, the German obviously had physical problems and conceded the decisive break in round five to make it 5:3. Carballes Baena didn't let this advantage be taken away and served safely to a 7: 6 (5), 6: 1, 3: 6, 2: 6 and 6: 3 success.
Sinner, Hurkacz sure, Gaston entertains
Jannik Sinner, on the other hand, did not spend long with the US qualifier Bjorn Fratangelo. The Italian dominated the action on court 7 almost at will and finally got his ticket for the second round with 6: 3, 6: 3 and 6: 3 in just under two hours. Just like the Pole Hubert Hurkacz, who clearly defeated Giulio Zeppieri in three sets.
However, there was a big fight on the Suzanne-Lenglen court, where Hugo Gaston - now downright predestined for memorable matches at the Stade Roland Garros - won an epic five-set duel with the Australian Alex de Minaur in the champions tie break at the end of the fifth set. With frenetic cheers from the French audience, who at times acted quite unfairly, especially towards the end of the match.
Here is the men's individual tableau in Paris!
