Dominic Thiem can already look forward to a fixed place at the French Open

Dominic Thiem will have felt a real chunk of his heart after the first major ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the European clay court season in Monte Carlo. Not only that the Lichtenwörther will return to the top 100 in the coming week, he has already secured a place at the Grand Slam tournament in Roland Garros.

580 points, or 600?

The whole thing is made possible by a rule activated this season, according to which every professional can replace the three worst results in ATP Masters 1000 tournaments with results from lower-tier events (i.e. 500 and 250 tournaments). So far - with the exception of the 1000s event that was just held in the Principality of Monaco, which has never been a "commitment tournament" - all the results of the Masters tournaments have had to be taken into account in the ranking, even if they were zero points in the worst case.

The ATP live ranking does not yet take the current regulation into account either - there are 580 points stored there with the current status of the Lichtenwörther, but in reality it should be 600, since Thiem will certainly have Miami's zero points replaced. So the world ranking arithmetic remains a fairly complex tool, even for the player organization itself.
