The tennis year 2022 had started so well for Gael Monfils with the tournament victory in Adelaide and the strong performance at the Australian Open. And also in private terms, the Frenchman and his wife Elina Svitolina have a lot of joy in store with the birth of their first child together in October. However, the 35-year-old local hero will be absent from his home Grand Slam, the French Open, which begins next Sunday. Monfils announced this on social media.

He has been plagued by a heel injury since the tournament in Monte Carlo, which he now wants to get over with a small operation. For the French, the greatest hope is missing: Monfils is listed as the best in his country in the ATP world rankings in 22nd place, followed by Ugo Humbert in 45th place.

Monfils had won his eleventh career title in his first appearance in Adelaide in 2022 by beating Karen Khachanov in the final, after which he narrowly failed to beat Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. The veteran was able to set an exclamation mark in Indian Wells when he beat Daniil Medvedev there in the third round. Monfils played his last match in Madrid against Novak Djokovic.
