It was 7:6 (7), 7:6 (5) at the end of the first round game on day 1 of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix - in a game at eye level in which "a few points made the difference", like the overjoyed Vekic explained at the end in the on-court interview.

Vekic, formerly world No. 19, was back in strong form following knee surgery at the start of 2021 and won the Monterrey tournament in March - after falling out of the top 100 in 2022. The Croatian is currently back in 23rd place.

In Stuttgart she now meets the winner of the game between Maria Sakkari and Karolina Pliskova.

Out for Tamara Korpatsch

In the afternoon Qinwen Zheng had already reached the second round with a 6:4, 6:4 over lucky loser Alycia Parks, she is now the opening opponent of defending champion Iga Swiatek on Wednesday.

However, Tamara Korpatsch was eliminated after a 6:3, 4:6, 0:6 in a duel between two qualifiers against Cristina Bucsa.

Tatjana Maria will intervene in action on Tuesday: she meets Ylena In-Albon from Switzerland at 5 p.m.
