Federer celebrated seventh victory in the seventh duel with Istomin. In the second round, the British Dan Evans, who had also defeated Tatsuma Ito in three sets in the afternoon, is waiting on Wednesday.

Federer did not show his best service performance with 59 percent first serve, but still recorded 14 aces and did not allow a single breakball over the entire match. With a service winner, he ended the game with his second match ball after less than two hours.

"It's nice to play here again. Some shots worked really well, I'm happy to be healthy," said Federer. "The body keeps coming back, but now it is quite good. It is important to relax again and again. I had a great preparation and I hope to repeat the good performances."
