It can only be speculated whether the postponement of the French Open by one week in 2021 has helped improve the spectator situation. The French sports minister Jean-Michel Blanquer announced the guidelines for the second major of the year to the TV channel France 3 on Sunday.
According to this, the capacity of the grandstands may not exceed 35 percent on the first few days, and up to 5,000 fans will be allowed into the stadiums from the quarter-finals, which are scheduled to start on June 9th. This concerns the Court Philippe-Chatrier and the Court Suzanne-Lenglen.
At the last event in autumn 2020, the maximum number of spectators was 1,000 per day. Which, especially when the roof over the chatrier was closed, ensured a good atmosphere. The largest clay court tournament on the tennis calendar starts this year on May 30th, with record winners Rafael Nadal and Iga Swiatek entering the race as defending champions.
