Marterer had to face the Australian Jordan Thompson on Court 5. And he mastered this task brilliantly. The German Davis Cup winner did not let a long rain interruption throw him off his rhythm, winning 6:3, 6:2 and 6:0 after a total playing time of almost two hours.
In the second round, Marterer will face either Alejandro Tabilo or Zizou Bergs. Tabilo is seeded 26th - and recently reached the semifinals in Rome, where he lost to Alexander Zverev in three sets.
Fellow countryman Daniel Altmaier, however, had to go the full distance. He beat Laslo Djere 7:5, 6:4, 6:7 (6), 5:7, 7:6 (5), after a playing time of 5 hours and 7 minutes! The match only ended after midnight. Altmaier had already had a match point in the fourth set, but still had to go into extra time.
He will now face Stefanos Tsitsipas or Marton Fucsovics.
