Even before the Australian Open (January 16-29) begins this year's competition for victories, a benefit event called "Tennis Plays for Peace" will take place at the Rod Laver Arena on January 11 in aid of Ukraine. So far, Carlos Alcaraz, Rafael Nadal, Coco Gauff, Maria Sakkari, Alexander Zverev, Frances Tiafoe and Alex de Minaur have confirmed their attendance.
The proceeds from the benefit event will benefit the organizations Unicef Australia and Global Giving, which are taking care of those affected by the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. "We look forward to a spectacular evening of tennis and entertainment and a wonderful opportunity to come together and raise much-needed funds," said Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley.
Tiley: Tennis community can show 'sincere support'
"Tennis is a truly global sport with an international community of players always ready to help. Through 'Tennis Plays for Peace' the tennis community can provide practical help through fundraising and show our sincere support to the victims of war," continued Tiley .
As there will be tournaments in both Adelaide (women & men) and Hobart (women) in the coming week, the field of participants for the benefit event has not yet been finally determined. Further commitments will therefore only be made shortly before the start of the event.
