US Open: camera off - in all sizes and shapes

Where two or three TV stations used to report on a Grand Slam tournament, the space for the cameras at the US Open 2022 is getting pretty tight.

Babsi Schett was granted 90 seconds for her interview with Ons Jabeur on Wednesday. It's safe to assume the Tyrolean tennis goddess made the most of that minute and a half that went on the air for Eurosport. Most importantly, the camera that captured the conversation between Schett and Jabeur corresponded to the standards that had been learned over the years. A really nice, yes, also fat part that recorded the pictures for the moving words.

Which is no longer a matter of course in 2022. well, the mobile team from ServusTV around moderator Christian Baier still works with a conventional camera, the transport of which is done according to the formula learned in physics lessons (distance traveled times force used) really work .

Others are a little sportier. Like the Spanish colleague, for example, who sends his assessments home every day from the TV Garden right in front of Arthur Ashe Stadium. A tripod, a mobile phone and a microphone connected to it - if in doubt, that should do the trick. And it does.

Tennis fans want to be provided with more and more information and moving images, which is also reflected in the number of TV reporters. It's not just the broadcasting TV stations like ESPN that have established themselves more or less broadly in the National Tennis Center. Streaming services like Amazon Prime aren't stingy either, bringing in specialists like Daniela Hantuchova or Jim Courier as experts.

However, Aryna Sabalenka, a few meters from the press center, impressively demonstrated that the future might lie somewhere else entirely. She had one of her companions film her training and said a few sentences about it – and will certainly soon be spreading this little film on social media. Where the time limits are technical. And not at the whim of the ITF, as in the case of Ons Jabeur.
