Bouchard easily won her opening match in Flushing Meadows against Yuki Naito 6:3, 6:3. She now meets fourth seeded Linda Noskova. /

For the Canadian, the first victory in the US Open qualifying tournament is already a great success, she is playing her second tournament in New York since spring 2021. After long problems and unsuccessful conservative treatments, Bouchard had to undergo shoulder surgery and fell more than out for a year. Last week she celebrated her comeback at an ITF tournament in Vancouver, losing at the start.

The former world number five is currently unranked due to her long break from playing.

Can Genie Bouchard start again?

The 28-year-old Bouchard has experienced a gigantic ups and downs in the past eight years. In 2014 she made her big breakthrough with two semi-finals at the Grand Slams and reaching the final in Wimbledon. In 2015 she was unable to repeat her successes. It only worked again at the US Open - but here Bouchard slipped in the locker room and suffered a concussion, she then had to cancel her round of 16. She later sued the US association and allegedly won a large settlement.

Sometimes things went better on the court, sometimes worse. After a memorable 2017, she almost fell out of the top 200 the following year, but made it back into the top 100 players at the end of the 2018 season. In 2020 she slipped down to 330th place. And just as she was back on track, in 116th place, she had to have the shoulder surgery done.

Will she be able to build on past successes again? A successful qualification in New York would be a strong start.
