Ostapenko, who won the French Open in 2017, is still in her native Latvia and should concentrate fully on the clay court season. In the past few days she has been playing a beach tennis tournament, which she promptly won.

The 23-year-old is currently in 42nd place in the WTA world rankings, but would still have been a seeded player in the main field of the US Open. Six of the top 10 players have given up living in the New York bubble. Ash Barty, Simona Halep, Bianca Andreescu, Elina Svitolina, Kiki Bertens and Belinda Bencic are skipping the event due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Whitney Osuigwe (USA) slips into the peloton due to Ostapenko's cancellation. Osuigwe was originally given a wild card, which is now given to Katrina Scott (USA).

The Spaniard Suarez Navarro will not be in New York either. "My health is not in a position to compete," wrote the Spaniard on Twitter. She must follow the advice of her medical team.
