Naomi Osaka was eliminated in round one

For Naomi Osaka , the 2022 Grand Slam season ends with another disappointment: The 24-year-old had to say goodbye to the US Open after round one. The unseeded Japanese lost 6:7 (5) and 3:6 to top 20 player Danielle Collins in New York.

Collins scored his first win in the fourth duel with Osaka and was relieved after the match: "I just had to go out there, learn from it and make adjustments. I think I did that by and large. If you lose to someone three times , you really have nothing to lose." The American now meets Cristina Bucșa.

Osaka misses fifth major trophy

Osaka, who lost a 3-0 lead in the first set, failed to add a fifth Grand Slam title to their vita this season. The former world number one had previously triumphed twice at the US Open (2018 and 2020).

In addition to Osaka, another major winner suffered a bankruptcy in the night session, Emma Raducanu. The defending champion in New York lost 6-3 and 6-3 to Alize Cornet at Louis Armstrong Stadium .
