Niemeier won 6: 4, 7: 6 (5) against the 19-year-old Chinese Zheng Qinwen and now faces a Herculean task.
The next opponent of the German hopeful is the world number one Iga Swiatek from Poland, who defeated Lauren Davis from the USA 6: 3, 6: 4 and is aiming for her second Grand Slam title this year after the French Open. The 21-year-old has so far remained in the tournament without losing a set. However, Swiatek had to struggle against davis and was 3-0 down in the second set.
Also Sabalenka and Pliskova continue
Niemeier, who reached the quarter-finals in Wimbledon, will already improve her previous world ranking of 108. In the second set she was already 4-1 down against Zheng, but kept her nerve. And let her forehand run free in the crucial phases of the tie-break. Just like the match ball, which Niemeier shot inside-in into her opponent's field.
Aryna Sabalenka was convincing in the evening games, beating Clara Burel 6-0 and 6-2 after just 68 minutes of play. Karolina Pliskova had to fight hard against Belinda Bencic. The Czech, who was defeated by Angelique Kerber in the final of the US Open in 2016, finally won 5: 7, 6: 4 and 6: 3.
