WTA Adelaide: Belinda Bencic beats Muguruza, Kvitova continues too

Belinda Bencic (WTA No. 13) has reached the round of 16 at the WTA250 tournament in Adelaide.

The Swiss beat former number 1 Garbine Muguruza 6:3, 6:4 and now meets the winner of the game between Jelena Ostapenko and Anna Kalinskaya in the round of 16. Compatriot Jil Teichmann is also in the round of 16 after beating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7:5, 6:4.

Pavlyuchenkova, French Open finalist from 2021, was back on the match court for the first time after a break of more than half a year due to injury.

Petra Kvitova also celebrated a fine success: The two-time Wimbledon winner beat the reigning Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina 6:3, 7:5.

Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins is also next after a 6: 2, 6: 4 over Karolina Pliskova - this time she had to go through the qualification and won there in round 1 against Jule Niemeier.

Garcia top after cancellations by Swiatek, Jabeur and Pegula

Top seeded in Adelaide is Caroline Garcia as actual No. 4 of the tournament. The reason: The top 3 in the world, Iga Swiatek (right shoulder injury), Ons Jabeur (elbow injury) and Jessica Pegula (change of schedule), all canceled before the start of the tournament.
