The 2021 Olympic Games began with a bitter disappointment for the aspiring Russian Andrey Rublev. As a co-favorite for a medal in the men's singles, this ended for the 23-year-old in the first round, with 3: 6 and 4: 6 it was a surprising and disappointing defeat for the Russian against Kei Nishikori.
But things went better for Andrey Rublev in the mixed doubles, where the 23-year-old ran a gold run alongside Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and was crowned Olympic champion in the all-Russian final against Elina Vesnina and Aslan Karatsev. Not a triumph in his (much more prestigious) parade discipline, but a not insignificant success for Rublev: "Winning for his country is a dream," said the world number seven before the ATP Masters 1000 event in Toronto.
Rublev focuses on Toronto
A little behind the biggest sporting event on the planet, the Russian also took the opportunity to explain his relationship with the Olympics: "It is hard to believe for someone who has followed the Olympics since childhood, although he does not understand all sports. Everyone follows them Olympic Games, and when you grow up and understand what it's about, you think that maybe one day you can be there and take part. So winning the gold medal was something I've been waiting for. "
Now the focus is on the tournament in Canada, where Rublev would like to attack again in the individual. "Every tournament is important. I always want to do well and improve, and a Masters 1000 is a lot of points if you do well. I've started well in those tournaments this year, but it's a long way. Besides, I have Haven't played the tour since Wimbledon and I am very motivated to do it again. "
