In the end, Tennys Sandgren could only shake his head in appreciation and congratulate his victorious opponent David Ferrer. The two had contested the late match at the ATP Tour 500 tournament in Acapulco, Ferrer won twice in the tie-break. And not only added a match to his farewell tour, but also a meeting with Alexander Zverev. Again, this will only be played at a late hour, the game is scheduled for not before 10 p.m. local time (5 a.m.CET, in our match tracker).

Ferrer, 36 years old and only at position 145 in the ATP world rankings, will end his outstanding career at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid in May 2019. In Acapulco, however, he could discuss further details about his farewell directly with the tournament director of Madrid, namely Feliciano Lopez. The left-hander is also in round two after a three-set win against Dusan Lajovic.

Zverev in the Davis Cup without problems against Ferrer

Alexander Zverev is waiting for David Ferrer in Acapulco. In the record with the German number one, the veteran is 2: 3 behind, most recently the two met in 2018 at the Davis Cup in the arena in Valencia. At the time, Zverev proved too strong for Ferrer, who nevertheless became the hero of the Spaniards - with his epic five-set win against Philipp Kohlschreiber on day three.

The German may have already erased the first match between Ferrer and Zverev from his memory: In 2014 Alexander Zverev stormed into the semi-finals in Hamburg, but Ferrer only won one game there. Four and a half years later the conditions are completely different, after his dominant lecture against Alexei Popyrin Zverev is the clear favorite in the second round game.
