Local hero Jan-Lennard Struff did not find his sporting luck at the lawn tournament in Halle, Westphalia, this year either and failed in the first round. The wildcard starter, who only made his comeback last week after a long injury break, lost to Belarusian Ilya Ivashka 6: 3, 3: 6, 6: 7 (5: 7). With nine main field participations, Struff failed seven times at the first and twice at the second opponent.
The Warsteiner was once used for Blau-Weiß Halle in the tennis Bundesliga. At the ATP tournament, however, the first round win against the Russian top player Daniil Medvedev last year was one of the very few highlights.
For the German champion Henri Squire (Duisburg) the tournament is over after the first round. The 21-year-old also received a wild card, but he had to retire against the Serbian Laslo Djere when the score was 3-4 due to an injury.
