Federer actually only wanted to contest his preparation for the French Open in Madrid. There the Swiss player was eliminated on Friday in the quarterfinals against Dominic Thiem. In Rome Federer is in third place in the tournament and could face Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals.
After his quarter-finals in Madrid against Dominic Thiem, he left it open whether the Swiss would actually serve in the Italian capital: "I'm not sure whether I'll go there. I'll probably decide at the weekend."
Dominic Thiem didn’t get it well; the Austrian starts after a walk-free against either Fernando Verdasco or Kyle Edmund and could face Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals. The defending champion has either Jeremy Chardy or Richard Gasquet as opponents.
Alexander Zverev, who lost to Nadal in the final last year, is waiting for the winner between Matteo Berrettini and Lucas Pouille and has been drawn on the branch by Kei Nishikori or in the upper half to Novak Djokovic. The number one in the world faces either Pablo Carreno Busta or Denis Shapovalov.
