It needed a sensation, it became a sensation. Even before the start of the final group match against Spain, it was clear that Britain would need a 3-0 win to advance to the Billie Jean King Cup semi-finals. And the Brits were actually able to achieve this in Glasgow!
First, Heather Watson prevailed against Nuria Parrizas Diaz 6:0 and 6:2, in the second singles Harriet Dart managed a big surprise against Paula Badosa with her 6:3 and 6:4 win. In the all-important doubles competition, Alicia Barnett and Olivia Nicholls finally ensured Great Britain's rise with a 7: 6 (5) and 6: 2 victory over Aliona Bolsova Zadoinov and Rebeka Masarova.
Two "finals" on Friday
In the second evening duel, the Czech Republic beat Poland 2-1. Karolina Muchova defeated Magdalena Frech 6:2 and 6:2 in the first singles, Magda Linette fought back with a 6:4 and 6:1 win over Karolina Pliskova. In doubles, Katerina Siniakova and Marketa Vondrousova then ensured the Czech victory (6:2 and 6:3 against Katarzyna Kawa and Linette).
In Group D on Friday there will be a direct duel between the USA and the Czech Republic for promotion to the semi-finals. The same applies to the encounter between Switzerland and Italy in Group A. In Groups B ( Australia ) and C (Great Britain), however, the decision has already been made.
