Borna Coric's 2021 season will probably go down in the still young history of Croatian tennis talent as an extremely messed up. At the end of May, the 24-year-old announced that persistent shoulder problems had caused his flood of rejections during the European clay court season. Pain that is so strong that the world rankings 35. had to undergo an operation in early summer.
"A permanent solution is needed: After my team and I talked to leading doctors, we decided that an operation was the best option," Coric said at the time. Borna Coric now seems to be struggling with the consequences of the operation. As it became known on Monday, the Croatian will not be able to start at the US Open. "Despite a lot of hard work, I have not yet fully recovered from my shoulder surgery," said the 24-year-old on social media.
Good performance last year
He now needs something to get back to the level that it takes to compete with the best players in the world. This means that the Croatian also has the extremely good result at the US Open last year out of the ranking, when Coric had defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas, among others, and only failed in an extremely narrow quarter-final against later finalist Alexander Zverev.
Borna Coric is currently 35th in the ATP world rankings, but the Croatian's last match on the tour was some time in the past. After his bitter second round defeat at the Australian Open, the 24-year-old only started in Rotterdam at the beginning of March, where he failed in the semifinals to Marton Fucsovics.
