Joel Schwärzler narrowly missed out on a happy ending at the US Open 2023: The 17-year-old from Vorarlberg, who was already eliminated in the singles in round one, lost the junior doubles final with his Italian partner Federico Bondioli against Max Dahlin (Sweden) and Oliver Ojakaar (Estonia) with 6:3, 3:6 and 9:11.

Schwärzler/Bondioli, who had previously defeated the top-seeded pairing of Yaroslav Demin and Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez in the semifinals on Saturday (local time), found two match points in the all-important match tiebreak at 9:7. Thanks to four point wins en suite, Dahlin/Ojakaar were finally able to celebrate the title.
