The start was made by Belgium in Group D. The number four standing in the Nations Ranking for top player David Goffin (ATP 11) lived up to their favorites status in the match against Colombia (18th). Steve Darcis (ATP 158) scored the first point for the Europeans with a 6: 3, 6: 2 over Santiago Giraldo (ATP 277). Goffin subsequently defeated Daniel Elahi Galan (ATP 194) 2-6 in a 3: 6, 6: 3, 6: 3 at the indoor hard court tournament.
Losing Italian favorites
In Group B defending champion Croatia (2) lost to Russia (21st) first, the first game of Borna Gojo (ATP 280) against the favored Andrey Rublev (ATP 23) with 3: 6, 3: 6. The Croatian number one Borna Coric (ATP 28) could not turn the rudder against Karen Khachanov (ATP 17) and lost 7: 6, 4: 6, 4: 6.
In the third duel of the day, it was also not in the extension. In group F between the favored Italians (10th) and Canada (14th) it was after the two singles 2: 0 for the outsider. A 6: 7, 5: 7 of the Italian Fabio Fognini (ATP 12) against Vasek Pospisil (ATP 150) could no longer compensate Matteo Berrettini (ATP 8). The Italian defeated Denis Shapovalov (ATP 15) sparingly with 6: 7, 7: 6, 6: 7 and had to pocket his second deciding defeat for his team.
