The mother of two won in the third round against the fifth seeded Greek Maria Sakkari 6:3, 7:5. For Maria it is the biggest success of her career - and that 15 months after the birth of her second daughter.
While Niemeier (WTA No. 97) and Maria (No. 103) are getting started in the All England Club, a number of top players have been eliminated early. Sakkari became the sixth top 10 player to get caught in one of the first three rounds. After 1:31 hours, Maria converted her second match point.
In the second set, she made up for a break deficit and ended up serving through.
Maria now meets 12th seeded Jelena Ostapenko.
Should Maria and Ostapenko win again, they would meet in the quarterfinals.
