The two-time French Open champion Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz have to tick off their dream of a common medal. The duo from Coburg and Frankfurt / Main lost to the two-time individual Olympic champions Andy Murray and Joe Salisbury (Great Britain) 2: 6, 6: 7 (2) on Monday and thus missed the quarter-finals.
Due to rain, Krawietz / Pütz were only able to enter the court a good hour late, after a short start there was another weather-related break of 1:45 hours. After that, Murray / Salisbury were initially more compelling in their game. In the second set, the German doubles bit their way into the match, but the British turned it up again in the tie-break. Murray / Salisbury will now face Frances Tiafoe / Rajeev Ram or Marin Cilic / IvanDodig in the quarter-finals
Krawietz had triumphed at the French Open in Paris in 2019 and 2020 together with Andreas Mies (Cologne). In Tokyo, however, he has to do without his regular partner, as Mies is recovering from a knee operation. The 29-year-old Krawietz will still fight for a medal in the mixed competition with Laura Siegemund (Metzingen) in Tokyo.
