Reilly Opelka will miss the US Open

Damper for US tennis fans: As it became known on Monday evening, the country's number three, Reilly Opelka, will be absent from the last major event of the year. It was not yet known why the 24-year-old had to cancel the Grand Slam event in Flushing Meadows. Most recently, the 24-year-old was absent in Montreal and Cincinnati.

This is the second prominent cancellation for the hard court classic this Monday: Earlier in the day, Alexander Zverev, who was not fit in time after the serious ankle injury, canceled his start in New York City. In all likelihood, Zverev will return to the big stage for the Davis Cup finals.

Djokovic as a big question mark

A consolation for all US tennis fans: Jack Sock is moving into the main draw of the US Open for Reilly Opelka. Another major event draw would also open up a wildcard currently reserved for JJ Wolf. According to the seed list, the 23-year-old would be next in the main draw. The wildcard that was released would therefore be occupied by the second-placed in the wildcard challenge - and with it Aleks Kovacevic.

The Russian Daniil Medvedev will go to work in New York City, followed by Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas. At the moment it is still unclear whether and by when Novak Djokovic will cancel his start at the last Grand Slam highlight of the year: As of now, the Serb, who is still not allowed to enter the USA due to the lack of COVID-19 vaccination, seems in the entry list.
