Tennis shooting star Carlos Alcaraz still has his sights set on his first Grand Slam title and the jump to the top of the world rankings after a late-night thriller in New York. The 19-year-old Spaniard passed a difficult test in the round of 16 of the US Open against former tournament winner Marin Cilic 6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 4, 4: 6, 6: 3. The match at Arthur Ashe Stadium lasted almost four hours.
To become the new number one, Alcaraz, who converted his first match point at 2:24 local time, must at least reach the final. At the same time it is clear that after the elimination of 2014 winner Cilic in New York there will be a new major winner.
Alcaraz lets it get late
Alcaraz is also a contender, as is his next opponent Jannik Sinner, who completed his collection of Grand Slam quarterfinals. With the 6: 1, 5: 7, 6: 2, 4: 6, 6: 4 success against the Belarusian Ilya Ivashka, the 21-year-old South Tyrolean is the youngest male tennis professional to have achieved this feat since Novak Djokovic in 2007/08.
Sinner had also reached the round of the last eight at the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon. He succeeded his compatriot Matteo Berrettini in New York, with whom he forms the first Italian quarter-final duo in the history of the tournament (since 1881).
Here the single tableau from New York.
