Jannik Sinner could meet Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals

Early on Sunday morning (local time), Jannik Sinner was the last player to buy the round of 16 ticket for the US Open 2022: The 21-year-old defeated Brandon Nakashima in Louis Armstrong Stadium after a complicated initial phase, ultimately confidently 3: 6, 6: 4, 6: 1 and 6: 2 and is thus in New York for the second time in a row in the round of 16.

In this, Sinner meets surprise man Ilya Ivashka, who, after his second-round success over Hubert Hurkacz, took Lorenzo Musetti out of the tournament in four sets. However, the tennis world is looking a little further ahead, as there could be another meeting with Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals.

Alcaraz in top form so far

The Spaniard has shown outstanding performances in Flushing Meadows so far and has not yet lost a set, in the round of 16 he will face Marin Cilic. After his smooth success over Jenson Brooksby in round three, Alcaraz was enthusiastic about his level: "I played really, really well."

If Cilic shouldn't be a problem in his current condition, a possible duel against Sinner would probably be the first real position determination at the US Open 2022. Because the South Tyrolean won the previous two meetings this year and showed Alcaraz relatively clearly the limits both in Wimbledon and in Umag. Especially in terms of play.
