Kyrgios cares. A term that was actually reserved for compatriot Bernard Tomic ("Bernie cares") for a long time, when he occasionally revealed a fighting spirit and an interest in winning.
So now Nick. And he cares more about victories or defeats than he was willing to admit. Or better: the best possible performance in a Grand Slam tournament. At the latest after he sniffed a win in Wimbledon and reached the final there.
Kyrgios freaks out after defeat
At the US Open, after his victory over the defending champion Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal's exit, Kyrgios was considered by many betting providers as the top favorites for the title. All the more bitter the end for the world number 25. now on Wednesday night against Khachanov.
Kyrgios smashed two of his racquets extensively and skillfully immediately after the handshake before disappearing.
Nick Kyrgios: "Have to wait for the Australian Open"
In the press conference that followed, Kyrgios was open about his disappointment at the missed opportunity.
Would defeats hurt even more now that he knew what he was capable of through Wimbledon and defeating Medvedev? "Yes, they do," said Kyrgios. "I feel miserable. I feel like I let so many people down."
Of course, Kyrgios had reacted to his box again in the course of the match, as well as to a drink bottle, without of course taking care of the clean-up work (another topic). But he makes no secret of the importance of the majors. He believes "these four tournaments are the only ones that will ever mean anything," he mused. "Now it feels like everything is starting all over again. I have to wait for the Australian Open." Will he even be on the tour again in the rest of 2022? Could be an interesting question.
He then made it clear how much the defeat hurt Kyrgios. "It's just heartbreaking. Not just for me, but for everyone who wanted me to win."
