The match between Maria and Niemeier, it was a really good one. After the nervous start, Maria got more length in her slice balls over time, although Niemeier transported the break at the beginning of the match to win the set. And also took the serve from her opponent right at the start of sentence 2.
But Maria didn't let that get her down, managed the rebreak and slowly but surely took control. She now mostly pulled through the forehand, anticipated Niemeier's attacks well and tempted him to make more mistakes. But the game remained at a high level: Both Maria and Niemeier used the entire range of tennis, attacked again and again cleverly, Niemeier often sent the high backhand volley in an unreachable short cross to the opposite side. However, Maria won the set with the point of the day when she safely cleared a tweener from Niemeier.
Niemeier with advantages, Maria victorious in the end
In the deciding set it was Niemeier who increased her first serve rate, at 2: 2 she used the only break chance of the sentence to lead, but at 4: 3 she made four mistakes without need to equalize. But Niemeier showed nerves of steel when she bravely continued to attack at 4:5 and 15:30 - after two devious smashes.
At 5:5 and the start, the rally of the tournament: Maria with stop-praise combos and at the end with the successful volley stop - which the spectators on Court 1 appreciated with standing ovations. In the end, Maria broke again - to win the match.
Both players then hugged each other for a long time at the net - rightly so, after a splendid and extremely high-class tennis match.
In the semifinals, Maria now faces the winner of the match between Ons Jabeur and Marie Bouzkova.
