Iga Swiatek really knows how to deal with pressure. The Pole proved that not only once this season: So far, the superior world number one has won eight titles in the current season, including those at the French Open and US Open. At the WTA Finals, the 21-year-old is now aiming for the perfect end to an already outstanding year.
"I'm really looking forward to being part of the finals. I have the feeling that it's a celebration of what we've achieved this year. I'm just proud to be here," said Swiatek before the tournament started. The three-time Grand Slam winner ended up in a group with Cori Gauff, Caroline Garcia and Daria Kasatkina, the favorite role is naturally clearly distributed. Nevertheless, Swiatek was warned: "I have the feeling that there is a lot of variety in my group in terms of the way Coco, Caro and Dasha play."
Unlike her competitors, Swiatek took a short break before the end of the season in Fort Worth. A good decision, as she implied: "The preparation went well. We did everything we had planned. I was able to recover." The 21-year-old had previously served in Ostrava (final) and San Diego (tournament win). "I felt really bad after those two tournaments. Now I feel fresher and that's the only thing that counts because it allows me to give my all during the matches."
Before Swiatek gets involved in the tournament against Kasatkina on Tuesday, the matches between Jessica Pegula and Maria Sakkari and Ons Jabeur and Aryna Sabalenka will take place on Monday. And of course, these women are also united in one goal: to prevent Iga Swiatek's next coup.
