Kim Clijsters announced on Tuesday that the third and final chapter of her tennis career is coming to an end. The 38-year-old started her career 25 years ago and won a total of 52 titles. "I have decided not to play tournaments anymore," she wrote on her Instagram channel. "I can't wait for the new adventures that will come my way. Thank you to everyone who has supported me over the past two years.”

The six-time Grand Slam winner - four times in singles, twice in doubles - made some headlines in 2019 when she announced that she was actually going to try a third time. At the time, she said, "I don't feel like I have to prove anything, but I want to challenge myself."

More than seven years lay between her second retirement in 2012 and another attempt to be successful on the tour. She lost to Garbine Muguruza in Dubai in February 2020 but gave the tennis world reason to believe she remained confident in herself and her abilities. But just a month later, Corona threw a spanner in the works – the third comeback could never really get going.
