Angelique Kerber has confidently reached the second round of the WTA 1000 event in Rome. The three-time Grand Slam winner beat Lauren Davis 6-1 and 6-0 in the opening match of the clay court tournament. Kerber will now face 17th seed Veronika Kudermetova.
Kerber, who lost to Davis in three sets in the second round of Wimbledon in 2019, had no problems at all with the American this time. The German never let anything go wrong in the Grand Stand Arena and converted her second match point after just over an hour.

Four first-round matches also took place on Center Court on Tuesday. However, Italian tennis fans had no reason to celebrate, as both Martina Trevisan (against Yulia Putintseva) and Lisa Pigato (against Shelby Rogers) lost in two sets.
Meanwhile, Paula Badosa showed one of her strongest performances of the season, defeating 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva 6-2 and 6-3. 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez, on the other hand, suffered a surprising 4-6 and 1-6 defeat to Ana Bogdan in her opening match.
