The Madrid-Rome double is just one match away for Iga Swiatek. After beating Coco Gauff 6:4 and 6:3, the Pole is the first player to reach the final of the WTA Tour 1000 tournament in Rome. There she will face either Aryna Sabalenka or Danielle Collins. Swiatek won the title against Sabalenka in a dramatic final in Madrid a few days ago.
The affair against Gauff was also a close one at first. It went back and forth until 4:4 in the first set, then Gauff gave her opponent the decisive break with two double faults. In the second act, Swiatek took Gauff's serve to make it 3:2, but the industry leader missed further chances in the seventh game. When the score was 3:4, Coco Gauff had the opportunity to make a comeback, but Swiatek remained stable.
Ultimately, it was Iga Swiatek's better forehand and her outstanding returns that made the small difference. After a playing time of 1:47 hours, Swiatek had her first match point - and Gauff pushed a backhand out.
