Let's face it: fashion is a matter of taste, but if you look at the outfits of some professionals from past decades, you can't avoid John McEnroe's most famous saying. "You cannot be serious!"
The good Johnny Mac may serve himself as a cult figure today, the McEnroe wig has become just as much a part of tennis disguise as perhaps the most classic outfit ever worn in tennis, namely that of his opponent Björn Borg. The doubles of the two keep appearing at tournaments, for the general amusement of spectators and tennis romantics.
Fashionable times with Agassi and Kournikova
Perhaps the most conscious outliers started Andre Agassi . The long mane, the neon-colored cycling trousers and jeans shorts, a sloppy shirt and a bright headband, still in Nike lava shoes - and he was done, Andre. Only the admission, which had to be a wig at the end of his hair time, shocked one or the other fan. Speaking of admission: Agassi also claimed that he hardly had a first Grand Slam final against Andres Gomez in Paris in 1990 to be able to move because that hair piece had loosened somewhat and he was afraid to suddenly stand "topless". The consequence, almost five years later: hair off, pirate cloth on - and of course that was the boss.
And then the time when Anna Kournikova broke the hearts of tennis fans. "On the seventh day, God created Anna K." the fans languished, "Only the ball should bounce" countered Kournikova in an advertisement for a sports bra. The fact is: Kournikova made tennis dress popular again on the court and in the late 1990s brought women's tennis an enormous influx, lacking a tournament victory or not.
Finally, the subject of fashion was mostly Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who should have deserved her own gallery, and Serena Williams, whose catsuit in Roland Garros caused so much sensation that the French association leader ultimately prohibited it. Mon Dieu!
