Alexander Zverev and the "new" Davis Cup: They weren't friends until now. Zverev had repeatedly emphasized that he clearly preferred the old system with home and away games. And accordingly not participating in the final round so far.

"I will play one hundred percent in the final round in Malaga in November. If I'm healthy, I'll be there until the end," said Zverev. He also clarified what exactly annoyed him about the previous new format. "In my opinion it was wrong to play everything in one place - like they did the first year in Madrid. It's good that we're playing in different countries at least now. We have four venues in the intermediate round. It's So at least another global tournament that is not just held in one country."
The current development is "going in the right direction," says the man from Hamburg. "To be clear: I've always loved the Davis Cup, I've always wanted to play it. But I thought if we top players do a little bit against the new format, the organizers will understand that the old format was better and maybe go back to it. "

The injury came at an extremely bad time for Zverev, and not just because of the chance of the French Open final. Zverev would also have had a good chance of becoming number 1 in the summer.
But he won't mourn it too much. "I'm not the type of person who resigns to his fate and sits in the corner and wonders why this happened to me."
